University College Dublin (UCD) has a successful track record of partnering with the enterprise sector and providing business with access to the University's world-class expertise and research outputs, student talent, office and laboratory facilities alongside business support services and programmes.Over 50 companies, ranging from early-stage high-tech start-ups to established innovation-led companies, are currently located at UCD and collectively have a staff of 375 based on the University's campus.
These companies, which cover sectors from agriculture and food to life sciences to ICT to physical sciences, engineering and cleantech, are based at NovaUCD or NexusUCD, and have located on campus in order to collaborate more closely with the University.
Companies include; DOCOsoft, Equinome, HeyStaks Technologies, Life Scientific, Neuromod Devices, Pinergy, Rubicoin and ResMed Sensor Technologies.
Professor Orla Feely, UCD Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact said, "The ethos of UCD has always included the establishment of effective partnerships of mutual benefit with the wider society, including the industry and business communities."
"UCD has a strong track record of collaboration with enterprise. More than 250 companies have funded research at the University over recent years and more than 1,000 companies have collaborated on research projects. In addition our track record is exemplified by the fact that more than 50 companies, with 375 predominantly highly-skilled staff, are located on campus and collaborating with the University."
She added, "Our aim is to further develop such partnerships with business in a structured way in order to maximise the relevance and impact of the University on the economy and society and at the same time augment our student experience and researcher engagement."
The innovation ecosystem at UCD to support enterprise includes the provision of facilities and related support programmes at NovaUCD, at NexusUCD and through the UCD Enterprise Gateway.
UCD has been supporting early-stage companies to grow, develop and create jobs at NovaUCD, the Centre for New Ventures and Entrepreneurs, since 2003. NexusUCD, the Industry Partnership Centre, which complements NovaUCD, officially opened in 2013.
NexusUCD offers high-quality modern office space, with short, medium or long term occupancy arrangements, and associated services to established innovation-led companies who are collaborating, or wish to collaborate, with UCD's world-class research base and who wish to locate in close proximity to this research base.
In 2014 the University established the UCD Enterprise Gateway to further streamline access for enterprise to the University and to enable it enhance the level of engagement and mutually beneficial collaborations with business.
Such supports for business have been enhanced at UCD over recent years through large-scale industry collaborative programmes such as Science Foundation Ireland-funded CSETs and Centres (e.g. Systems Biology Ireland and Insight Centre for Data Analytics) and multiple Strategic Research Clusters in areas ranging from Energy to Animal Production to Nanotechnology.
In addition three IDA/Enterprise Ireland-funded and industry-led technology centres, one in data analytics (CeADAR), one in connected health (ARCH) and one in food for health (FHI), are based at UCD.
