Exciting events will be happening in Tullow Street in June when Carlow County Enterprise Board in association with Carlow Arts Festival Eigse 2012 and Carlow Town Council present the “Tullow Street Pop Up Shop Project”. This experience will see 6 premises re-open their doors from 8th-17th June 2012 as galleries and craft outlets, and compete for business in a formal commercial environment.
The organisers are seeking aspiring retailers with an interest in arts, crafts and related boutique fare to apply now for this opportunity which includes seed capital funding of up to €1,500. The chosen retailers will be given a shop premises, shop-front repaint, and business mentoring to open shop for 10 days. Each candidate will be expected to assemble a business plan, undergo a brief spell of work experience with market leader in the field, and assemble a collection of art or craft works for sale. The package includes Business mentoring from leading business figures will also be offered and more importantly is also an opportunity to make an income and give valuable experience in the retail field.
The organisers envisage a minimum of 50% of the art/craftwork must come from the 059 area. “Commercial sales are an essential part of this project – it is not an opportunity for an artist or curator to exhibit the work of a single practitioner” said Hugo Jellett of Eigse. Kieran Comerford , Acting Chief Executive Officer of Carlow CEB said “This is an exciting project for Carlow Town and we are delighted to give this opportunity to 5 people aswell as a platform for people to see and buy craft and art from the Carlow area”.
As part of the programme Carlow CEB is also organising a Craft Retail Experience for Craft Producers following on from its Creative Carlow Project in 2011 and details on same will be available shortly.
