IntelLast week, as part of activities to mark the annual International Girls in ICT Day on April 25th, a group of students from Loreto Secondary School in Bray took part in the augural Inspiring Females program at the Intel campus in Leixlip. The Inspiring Females program invites groups of Transition Year female students to spend a day at the Intel campus where they take part in a number of facilitated sessions designed to introduce them to a hi-tech working environment and to encourage development of 21st century skills such as teamwork, presentation skills, creativity and digital literacy.

The daylong session included an introduction to Intel which gave the students in attendance an overview of the type of advanced manufacturing which takes place at the Intel campus. The group was then introduced to workshop facilitator, Bridge 21, who were on hand to deliver an innovative skills workshop which challenged the students to create multimedia materials illustrating a product that is ‘Designed for the year 2050’.

InspiringFemalesWith this future outlook in mind the girls spent the morning coming up with creative and quirky product ideas which they then used as the inspiration to create accompanying television, radio and print advertisements. In developing the various pieces of content the students had the chance to interact with a variety of different technologies, including both hardware and software tools.

During their lunch break the girls were joined by Intel engineers who shared with them their experiences of working in a hi-tech environment and how they came to follow their current career paths.

The afternoon session gave the participants the chance to finish their multimedia content before presenting out to their peers in groups, sharing with them their ideas for the future and the campaigns they had designed to support these ideas.

Sarah Sexton from Intel Ireland Corporate Affairs who hosted the event remarked, “as we celebrate International Girls in ICT Day we are delighted to host this, the first event in our Inspiring Females program, as it provides a great opportunity for us to welcome a group of students to the Intel campus where they can experience first-hand a hi-tech working environment. It is also a great chance to have them practically engage in 21st century skill development and we hope that the types of things they have learned through this program will be valuable to them in the future”.

International Girls’ in ICT Day, an initiative that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs), took place on April 25th. As part of this global initiative a number of different event and activities will be taking place that give girls the chance to gain a better understanding of the opportunities that the ICT sector holds for their future.

The output from the student projects will be shared on the Intel Ireland Facebook page over the coming weeks as the participating teams take part in the Inspiring Females video competition whereby the video that receives the most likes by the end of 2013 will win a prize worth €500.

The Inspiring Females program forms part of Intel Ireland’s broader Transition Year initiative which provides students with a unique opportunity to explore a range of experiences with the aim of;
•    Helping young students to understand the opportunity of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in terms of future career prospects
•    Introducing young people to encourage interest in the hi-tech industry as a future career choice
•    Encouraging consideration of subject selection at Leaving Certificate that will foster a path to STEM disciplines at third level
•    Supporting the development of 21st century skills in students, such as presentation skills, teamwork, creative thinking and problem solving
•    Introducing students to innovation processes and entrepreneurial thinking
