At a recent event held in UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, 50 students on the inaugural Graduates 4 International Growth Programme (G4IG) prepared to start their international business careers. The programme, an Enterprise Ireland initiative in partnership with UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, was set up to promote export led sales growth for Enterprise Ireland client companies while at the same time advancing graduates’ international business skills.

g4igpictureThe G4IG graduates are working across a range of export led industries including life sciences, cleantech, pharma, food and software, while also attending classes delivered by UCD Smurfit School. The students will be awarded a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Growth upon completing their 12 month overseas placement in countries including Japan, Australia, Brazil, China, Germany and the USA, with the option of progressing to a Masters on their return.

Damien McLoughlin, Professor of Marketing and Director of Executive Education at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, spoke at the event: “This unique programme is hugely relevant to Ireland’s sustained economic growth. It equips tomorrow’s business leaders to deal with new business challenges in an action learning environment where they are helping to drive the presence of Irish products and services around the world. These young people have a demanding road ahead as they aim to open doors for their sponsor companies.”

Also speaking at the event, John McGarr, Department Manager, Company Mentors and Advisors, Enterprise Ireland, said, “Irish companies achieved a record €1.95bn new export sales last year, and all the indications are that the upward graph is continuing in 2011. This G4IG programme was developed with that in mind so that graduates would be sent to market to support the current and long term export development strategies of their host companies, while gaining tremendous international business experience themselves.  They will be providing a vital service and I have no doubt a world of opportunity awaits the first class of G4IG”.

UCD Smurfit School provides a number of action learning initiatives as part of the School’s Postgraduate and Executive Education offerings.  The School has been chosen to deliver not only the G4IG programme, in partnership with Enterprise Ireland, but also a range of similar development programmes for both Irish and international companies.
